Down for gen and shipping- favorite ships are Soriku and Sorikai, but have a soft spot for Rikuroku and Rikunami too and am open to trying others! Cross-gen is also cool. My favorite type of threads are angst and fluff, tbqh, so if you give me either of those I'll be eternally grateful... I love playing around in canon but am also open to AU's of all kinds (just slight changes, put into other canons/works, basic AU tropes, etc.) Feel free to hit me up any time!

"To protect the things that matter. You know, like my friends."

Riku is a character that goes through a lot of character development and changes over the Kingdom Hearts series, but everyone starts somewhere. As a child he is shown to have been inquisitive, kind, oddly perceptive, and with an already apparent competitive streak. Most telling, however, is that he already wants to leave the islands he lives on. He tells Terra that he wants to go visit other worlds to become stronger and protect his friends, and when Terra encourages this and promises that it will happen someday it develops into a wish that he'll hold for years to come.

"It’s just... I’ve always wondered why we’re here on this island. If there are any other worlds out there, why did we end up on this one? And suppose there are other worlds... Then ours is just a little piece of something much greater. So we could have just as easily ended up somewhere else, right?"

In Kingdom Hearts Riku comes across as, put simply, a bit of a jerk at first and it only goes downhill. He's arrogant and competitive as anything, challenging his friends to races and fights at the drop of a hat and even has a running score with Sora. Teasing is one thing (and one thing that he enjoys doing) but his comments do come off as pretty harsh at times. His wish to leave the islands has become an obsession, helped along by the appearance of Kairi from another world and it's this ambition that first starts him on his road of Very Bad Decisions. Despite setting his home on the fast track to destruction he doesn't seem very concerned about it; instead saying that he's not afraid of the darkness or never seeing his family again and inviting Sora and Kairi along for the ride.

"Once we step through, we might not be able to come back. We may never see our parents again. There’s no turning back. But this may be our only chance. We can’t let fear stop us! I’m not afraid of the darkness!"

The freedom from his home isn't enough to make him happy, and in fact the first time Sora sees him after the islands' destruction he leaves on a sour note. At first cocky and assuming that Sora will be happy for his protection his mood goes downhill quickly at seeing that not only has Sora made some new friends, he's also gained a fancy new weapon and is more than capable of taking care of himself without Riku's help. Despite his unpleasant traits Riku has always wanted to help his friends. He just hasn't always been very good at it. In the past he hasn't particularly worried about what they wanted, and instead felt that what he wanted would be the best for all of them. Against his wish to be seen as a calm, mature person with all the answers (something he is most definitely not) he is plagued by insecurities about not only himself but his relationship with them. It's clear that being "replaced and unneeded" (in his mind) really hurts him, and this in conjunction with his jealousy of Sora starts to drive them apart. This rears its head when in his quest to save Kairi (and prove himself as "special" and better than Sora) he does more and more horrible and reckless things like kidnapping people, fighting Sora even when he has no defense but a wooden sword (!!!), and using more and more of the dark powers granted to him by Maleficent, someone he is shown to be suspicious of. Thinking things through really isn't something he's been good at.

"I turned to darkness because my heart was weak. I hate that weakness."

When he finally realizes the severity of his choices and actions and accepts that they were mistakes Riku is filled with regret and chooses to help Sora by shutting himself in the Realm of Darkness to protect the rest of the world's from it's influence. This is a turning point in his life and he works on moving forward by trying to make amends for what he's done, and changing himself and fixing the weakness of his own heart... although he finds it difficult to move forward in the right direction. The attitude and outward confidence is still there at first but he does become more self-deprecating in light of the things he's done and the guilt he feels, even going so far as to wonder out loud what he'd become after realizing darkness is such a part of him that he can even smell it. Even with his denials it's clear that he's afraid of his own weakness and the darkness, of what he's done and what he thinks he could do in the future. Determination is something he's never had a problem with however, even when it's a bit misguided, and he tries to tackle this problem head-on by trying to destroy the darkness not only around him but within him as well, as some form of Ansem still lingers and haunts him.

"C'mon Sora! Together, we can do it."

Riku has not been one to learn things easily. Even if people tell him the correct answer it's something he has to experience and see for himself, but he's finally getting the hang of "learning from his mistakes". It takes him time to realize that it's impossible to just erase the darkness in his heart or his past, and that he should accept it as a part of him and move on with it. It's something he struggles with as he works from the shadows to help his friends in 358/2 Days and KH2; to actually help them because even though he still has moments where he thinks what he wants is right for them he's finally getting the hang of helping them with what they want. But he would do absolutely anything for Sora and Kairi and is forced to use darkness for this reason, giving into darkness and changing his appearance to help Sora wake up and making him less willing to see them face to face. How was he supposed to face his friends with the face of their enemy, and after everything he'd done before that? He says he didn't want them to know, that he didn't want to be found but he wasn't particularly careful about the hints he was dropping left and right that it was him helping them. It appears more likely that while he did care what his friends thought about him and still felt massive amounts of shame and guilt he wanted their forgiveness and friendship back, and receiving it and finally accepting it for himself helps him out a lot.

"No. It's the road to dawn."

At this point in time Riku has mature a lot from the arrogant kid on Destiny Islands who enjoyed beating all his friends in sword fights and dreamed of the outside worlds. Caution has finally made it's way into his behavior, although even that gets thrown out the window when the safety of his friends is concerned. It's been hard for him to learn to open up to and depend on other people but he's certainly gotten better at it with Mickey, Sora, and Kairi. He still spends a lot of time worrying about his best friends but he's also much more sincere in his attempts at protecting them, doing it more for them than himself and in fact on a few occasions has been very self-sacrificing in the matter. Although he's finally learning to forgive himself insecurities still bother him, especially about his past, and no matter how much he's learned that he needs to use those experiences to move on and that his darkness is his own and can't hurt him he still questions whether he's worthy of people's friendship or even of having a keyblade of his own at all (wondering about this is what led him to agree to take the Mark of Mastery exam that Yen Sid laid out for he and Sora- along with wanting to make sure Sora would be alright while he took it, of course.)

"Have you forgotten? I'll tell you why. 'Cause I'm not a total sap like you."

Much quieter than he used to be, it must have been a bit alarming for the people on the islands that knew him before to see him again. Perhaps because of his year with limited contact with anyone more than three people he's also even more awkward (Shiki making a joke about him being her "knight in shining armor" is enough for him to get flustered and tell her she's "got the wrong idea!") He's more sincere and thoughtful with his actions in general, especially in serious situations, but he's still held onto the things that make him "Riku." Poking fun at his friends continues to amuse him, along with anything they'll throw back at him. It's also a useful motivation tool! Really! ("C'mon Sora, giving up already?") Sarcastic, snarky, and a bit of a smartass (if a more low-key one than he used to be) it only increases in the presence of those he wishes he was not in the presence of. A lot of his time was spent trying to do things on his own in the past but he's gotten a lot better at accepting help and relying on the people he knows are his friends, and despite his previous jealousy of Sora "replacing" him with Donald and Goofy he's even made new friends himself. Although he still enjoys competition the intense jealousy he felt of Sora has also faded; he admits to him at the end of KH2 that even though he figured he was "better at stuff" than he was he was still jealous of Sora and the way he could just follow his heart, something Riku wished he could do instead of over thinking and worrying about everything. He's come to a much greater appreciation of his friends as well and as quick as he is to tease them he's just as quick to compliment them.
And he's still curious about the worlds and their people- even if it's not quite the obsession it used to be thanks to time and experience.

"Consume the darkness, return it to light."
